In 2005, a project called "Latino Muslim Outreach Program," or LMOP, was established to educate the Latino community about Islam. It served as a resource for both Muslims and non-Muslims, by way of support groups, propagation, and volunteer services in various communities. LMOP facilitated the production of educational packets about Islam, Spanish pamphlets, and audio lectures about Islam in Spanish. Since then, it has evolved to serve the demand for electronic information. The goal of the new "Latino Muslim Reporter" is to build bridges of communication between Muslims and Latinos, focusing on gathering educational information about Islam in the Latino community under one umbrella. On this site, there are articles about current events, history, culture, Muslim Latinos in the US and Latin-America, conversion stories, and much more, both in English and Spanish. LMOP once promised to be "La Voz Latina del Islam (The Latino Voice of Islam)," from the creators of Hablamos Islam (www.hablamosislam.com), we hope to continue to be that voice insha'Allah.
En 2005, se estableció un proyecto llamado "Latino Muslim Outreach Program", o LMOP, dedicado a la educación sobre el Islam para la gente Latina. Sirvió como un recurso para los musulmanes y no-musulmanes, por medio de grupos de apoyo, propagación, y servicios voluntarios en varias comunidades. LMOP facilito la producción de paquetes con materiales educativos sobre el Islam, folletos en español, y audio de lecturas islámicas en español. Desde entonces, se ha evolucionado para servir a la demanda de información electrónica. La meta de la nueva página, bajo el nombre Latino Muslim Reporter, es construir puentes comunicativos entre los musulmanes y los latinos, enfocandose en reunir información educatíva sobre el Islam en la comunidad latina. Aqui se encuentran articulos sobre las noticias actuales, historia, cultura, los musulmanes latinos en los estados unidos y en latinoamérica, conversiones, y mucho más en inglés y en español. El lema de L-MO es ser "La voz latina del Islam", de los creadores de Hablamos Islam, esperamos continuar siendo esa voz, insha'Allah.

Por: Wendy Díaz La primera vez que viajé a Puerto Rico usando el hiyab, el velo que usamos las mujeres musulmanas, fue en el año 2002. En ese tiempo no conocía a ningún musulmán en la isla, hasta visitar una mezquita en Rio Piedras. Fue allí donde supe que había otras mezquitas en Puerto Rico y otros musulmanes puertorriqueños, aunque aprendí que la gran mayoría de los musulmanes en la isla eran árabes inmigrantes. Entonces comencé a entender quiénes eran los misteriosos árabes a quienes mi abuela les compraba productos de vez en cuando, al pasar por el pueblo con mercancía en los baúles de sus carros. Los había visto cuando era niña y quizás hasta les había hecho un gesto para que esperaran mientras mi abuela buscaba dinero en su monedera para pagarles. Latinos Accepting Islam: A Return to Their True Heritage

By Hernan Guadalupe The vast majority of Latinos are Roman Catholic due primarily to their culture or upbringing. But many of these inhabitants of North, South, and Central America are uncomfortable and disenchanted with the various beliefs and practices of the Catholic Church, including the emphasis on saints, doctrines such as the Trinity, praying to Mary (according to Catholic doctrine, it is "through" Mary as an intercessor who prays to God on behalf of the supplicant), and original sin, issues related to Church hierarchy, and lack of implementation of religious practices by many Catholics.
